I Feel Depressed About My Weight

I feel depressed about my weight, and don't know what to do. I've tried dieting but it never works.

Your appearance, whether it's fair or not, play a large role in defining who you are. It shapes how you view the world, and influences how the world views you.

So what can you do if you're experiencing weight problems and can't seem to change the way your body looks?

Don't Starve Yourself

When you feel desperate to lose weight you often take drastic and even dangerous eating habits. If you aren't losing weight fast enough, you may feel the only option is to completely stop eating.

While it seems like a logical response it is actually counter productive to stop eating completely. Trying to get through the day on a bare minimum of calories is also counterproductive to weight loss.

Your body, does not, and cannot make quick 180 degree changes. It isn't programmed to do that and it feels threatened when facing that possibility. Right now your body is used to getting a certain amount of calories. When you severely restrict calories one day to the next your body reacts by retaining and storing as many resources as possible.

That means if you starve yourself your body feels threatened and will latch on to the next thing you eat and store it as body fat for later use. Starving yourself is not going to work, because your body won't let it work.

You'll have to eat eventually, and when you do a great amount of calories will be stored as body fat. Your body has a reaction to everything you do, sometimes in ways that don't make sense to you.

That also means you can influence it to burn more calories through minor diet adjustments. Switching from simple carbs (high sugar, white flour) type foods to the more beneficial complex carb foods helps your body burn and use calories more efficiently.

Is It Genetic Or Environmental?

Some people have legitimate genetic problems when it comes to regulating and burning calories. If you fall into this category, your best course of action would be to seek medical advice on how to make the proper adjustments.

But the overwhelming majority of people that are overweight are struggling because of their environment and habits. If you look in your refrigerator and pantry and see it filled with unhealthy sugar and fat filled products you know your environment is setting you up for failure.

It will be hard to move forward, and maintain discipline when it comes to health and weight loss when you are surrounded by food that will roadblock your success.
